In August 2010, Depuy Orthopaedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, announced the recall of two of its hip replacement products. The recall was based on hundreds of complaints to the FDA. Unfortuantely  many patients with these defective products will be required to undergo a second hip replacment surgery after the devices failed.  The recalled “DePuy” products are:

  1. ASR XL Acetabular System for traditional hip replacement;
  2. DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System for a resurfacing or partial hip repalcement.

Common complaints include:

  • Audible clicking or crunching sounds in the hip
  • Sense the hip is not in place
  • Leg or low back pain
  • Groin pain
  • Hip pain
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Decline in the ability to do physical activity
  • Need to use a cane
  • Dislocation
