Dangers of Tractor Trailers

by on Tuesday, September 28, 2010  —  Blog, Truck (Tractor-Trailer) Accidents, Wrongful Death

Hillsborough county deputy was recently killed when his patrol vehicle was hit by a semi tractor trailer. Although this case is still under investigation it reminds us that we always want to drive defensively especially with massive vehicles like tractor trailers.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute recently released a study on long-haul truck drivers. The study involved outfitting semi tractor trailer cabs with video cameras.  The study lasted over a period of 18 months.  They found that when the drivers were texting their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting….23 times greater is a huge increase in risk.
The study also measured the amount of time the drivers eyes were distracted from the road and looking at the text.  The typical amount of time the driver’s eyes were looking at texts was almost 5 seconds.  This is typically enough time to cover the length of a football field while driving at highway speeds. This is scary stuff.  Please drive defensively!
