Use: Osteoporosis treatment

Issue: Can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, a condition that results in chronic pain and disfigurement and is difficult to treat; long bone fractures; and esophageal cancer.

FDA Action/recommendation: This news came out in 2008 with an FDA warning. However, on 3111/2010, the FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that at this point, the data reviewed have not shown a clear connection between bisphosphonate use and a risk of atypical subtrochanteric femur fractures.
