Will My Medical Insurance or Car Insurance Cover My Injuries from an Accident? Here’s What You NEED to know!

Categories:Auto Accidents

Car accidents can be very tricky. Logically, if you get into a car accident, you should be entitled to your fair compensation. Although insurance companies cover some expenses for your car accident, they are trained to give you as little compensation as possible. As such, understanding how insurance companies cover car accident injuries is critical in obtaining what you need and deserve.

Car Insurance:

  • Personal Injury Protection: In Florida, the minimum insurance that you MUST carry is Personal Injury Protection (PIP). PIP will cover a percentage of medical expenses or lost wages up to $10,000 but will not exceed. For example, if your medical expenses exceed the value of the policy, then you may have to pay for the rest of the costs out of your own pocket. It is often referred to as the “no fault” coverage as its inherent comprehensiveness pays out claims regardless who is at fault in the accident.
  • Bodily Injury: If a person is at fault and carrying Bodily Injury (BI) coverage, any additional medical expenses may possibly be paid through this coverage up to policy limits, depending on the extent of your injuries.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: This coverage will protect you in the event that an at-fault driver does not carry liability insurance or your injuries exceed the policy limits of the coverage that he/she does carry. As such, it is vital to have a good plan that covers you in the event of a car accident.

Health Insurance:

Like car insurance companies, health insurance companies do in fact cover your expenses if you’re involved in a car accident. However, payments by insurance companies can get messy if subrogation is filed. Essentially, if you are not at fault, your health insurance may initially cover your costs. However, since you are not at fault, your health insurance company will try to recover some of the costs from the insurance company of the person at fault. The fact that insurance companies partake in subrogation, means having a good lawyer is absolutely necessary in order to maximize your claim and coverage.

Statistics on Accidents:

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2014, there were 225,608 injuries due to traffic crashes. In 2015, there were 243,316 injuries, a 7.85% increase. These numbers are alarming! These statistics show around a quarter of a million people in Florida fell injured to car crashes. Hiring a good lawyer could have ensured that these victims got as much money as possible.
