What is a Hernia?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a hernia “occurs when an organ, intestine or fatty tissue squeezes through a hole or a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue.” The FDA explains that “hernias often occur at the abdominal wall.” Signs of a hernia “can be visible as an external bulge particularly when straining or bearing down.”

What is Physio-mesh?

According to the FDA there are many treatment options for hernias, including:

  • Non-Surgical-watchful waiting treatments
  • Surgical-laparoscopic, open repair treatments
  • Mesh treatments

Mesh treatments, specifically physio-mesh, have had complications. According to the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, SAGES, Physio-mesh is a flexible, composite, large pore partially absorb-able, polypropylene mesh designed to match the compliance of the abdominal wall.

Hernia Mesh (Physio-mesh) Lawsuit:

Ethicon, a manufacturer of Physio-mesh, sought to help patients with hernias; however, high rates of hernias continued while people used their Physio-mesh. Recurrence was a huge problem for Ethicon resulting in the voluntary withdraw of their Physio-mesh. This recall has left people in a sticky situation. Ethicon is fighting many lawsuits and people who have suffered due to Ethicon’s Physio-mesh are filing class-action lawsuits against the company.

Why is Physio-mesh so Dangerous?

According to a study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “when composite meshes are used in abdominal wall repair, seroma formation may persist and delay the desired integration leading to recurrence.” This conclusion has been reached by multiple studies. Ethicon has said that using two large independent research studies, the need for additional surgeries increased when Physiomesh was used. This consensus has been confirmed by another study from the Journal of Surgical Endoscopy. Patients that underwent Physio-mesh treatment suffered “significantly greater hernia recurrences and postoperative pain compared with Ventralight (physio-mesh alternative) patients.”
