Labor Day Q&A: Fun Facts about This Popular Holiday

As Polk County gears up for Labor Day weekend, you’re likely excited about having a Monday off work, and enjoying some well-deserved rest. What led to this popular holiday though, and why is it celebrated across the US? We took the time to dig up some fun facts about Labor Day, and what we found made us appreciate the day even more! Did you know…

  • The holiday was pushed by late 19th century labor workers just like you, who believed the employees who keep businesses (and the heart of America) running strong deserved some recognition!
  • The first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day was Oregon. They signed on February 21, 1887 and legislation by Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey was signed close behind. By June 28th, 1894, congress made Labor day a federally recognized holiday.
  • President Grover Cleveland signed the law making the first Monday of each September the nationally recognized celebration of Labor Day.
  • Labor Day was first celebrated with a parade, and that tradition continues today!

At Brooks Law Group, we are so thankful for the workforce of our Winter Haven community and the Polk County area at large. Living and working here is a privilege, and we feel honored to have some of the best employees working in our own offices. We want to take this Labor Day to recognize them, and let them know they and their daily hard work are seen and appreciated.
