Bicycling is enjoyed year round here in Tampa Bay by sporting enthusiasts as well as those who use their bicycles to commute to and from work. Despite the many safety precautions that riders take such as wearing helmets, following traffic laws and watching out for other drivers on the roadways, many serious accidents involving cyclists and trucks occur on our roadways. Unfortunately, no matter how many safety precautions cyclists may follow, cyclists are extremely vulnerable to sustaining serious or even fatal injuries when involved in bicycle accidents involving semi-trucks, especially those caused by a negligent driver.

In fact, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s office, a bicyclist was seriously injured recently after being struck by a semi-truck hauling a 53-foot box trailer in Winter Haven traveling northbound on U.S. 17 near Snively Avenue when it hit a 53 year old bicyclist. The truck’s tires crushed one of the man’s arms, and he had to be transported by air to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was listed in serious, but stable condition. The crash remains under investigation, although reports have ruled out speed and alcohol as playing any role in the accident.

Another cyclist was involved in a fatal crash in Tampa last month involving a trucking accident on N. Florida Avenue. According to Tampa Police, Rudolph A. Moncur, 59, traveling south on his bicycle failed to stop at a red light at the intersection on Florida Avenue and was struck by a truck travelling through the intersection on a green light. Moncur was taken to St. Joseph’s and pronounced dead. No charges are expected to be filed against the truck driver. An autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.
