Nissan made an official recall announcement to expand its original recall of vehicles containing a Takata airbag. The Takata brand has been the cause of over 25 million vehicles from a dozen manufacturers world wide. The Takata brand airbag inflation devices deploy with too much force which causes shrapnel to explode from within the car as it is activated. The shrapnel can cause serious and even fatal injuries especially in high-humidity regions like Florida and Louisiana. A recent injury occurred in Louisiana just days after Nissan submitted paperwork to the NHTSA confirming their recall on over 40,000 Nissan Sentra’s with front passenger airbags that could be defective. Nissan released the following statement:
Based on new field information and in consultation with NHTSA, Nissan Group is taking further action to expand the previously announced Takata Inflator Regional Recall to include additional Model Year 2004-2006 Nissan Sentra vehicles in the affected areas of the U.S. and its territories.
If you receive a recall letter please take your vehicle to a Nissan dealership to have the recall work performed at no cost. The company urges anyone who owns any vehicle that is potentially affected by the Takata’s recalls to enter their vehicle’s identification number (VIN) on NHTSA’s site http://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ or Nissan USA and Infiniti USA web sites. The websites will be updated with newly affected vehicles in approximately two weeks
Nissan and Infiniti are committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction and are working with NHTSA, Takata and our dealers to promptly address this issue.
Furthermore Honda has recalled over 100,000 cars with Takata airbags as of this year. The auto-maker is linked to 6 deaths due to the shrapnel. The most recent death has sparked an interest in altering a federal bill that discloses all recall information at the time of vehicle registration. Currently car dealerships are under no law to disclose of open recalls to potential buyers. The Takata company is being fined $14,000 per day for not providing the necessary information to the U.S. federal regulators which could have possibly saved 6 lives and prevented multiple injuries.
