It is reported that some Crayons contain Toxic Levels of Asbestos…
The safety of our children is of utmost importance. They are the future of our society, and it’s critical that we keep them safe throughout their development. I believe any companies that make and market products toward children must ensure their products are safe. When I think about possible safety hazards for kids’ toys, asbestos isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Would you believe me if I told you that your kids’ crayons may contain toxic levels of a known carcinogen?
The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) recently released a report that said Playskool crayons tested positive for asbestos. Asbestos, when inhaled or ingested, can lead to lung cancer or mesothelioma. We’ve known about the dangers of asbestos for many years now. Why can we find it in children’s crayons?
Playskool produces educational toys and games for children. Playskool’s parent company is the multinational toy giant Hasbro, which reported over $5 billion in revenue in 2016. This company has no need to cut corners. Hasbro has issued a statement claiming they are undergoing an investigation on the asbestos claims.
- The tested crayons were purchased at a Dollar Tree in Chicago but are sold nationwide through retailers like Amazon.
- Dollar Tree executives have also released a statement claiming independent tests show the crayons contain no asbestos.
This is not the first report to come out showing that some crayons manufactured in China have contained asbestos. While the asbestos contained in drinking water and in schools is federally regulated, there are no regulations in place for children’s products.
I don’t want to jump the gun before all the details have come out, but this is very concerning to me. I’ve dealt with many cases of mesothelioma and lung cancer over the years. I’ve heard countless heartbreaking stories. The United States is one of the few developed countries where asbestos is not completely banned. At the very least, we must do everything we can to keep our children away from this deadly carcinogen. For the time being, I’d stay far away from Playskool crayons!
Asbestos has been causally linked to four types of cancer.
- Lung Cancer
- Ovarian Cancer
- Laryngeal Cancer
These are the confirmed cancers that can be caused by asbestos. Both gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer have also been studied in relation to asbestos, but more research is needed still.
If that’s not enough for you, here are more facts:
- About 200,000+ lives were lost from asbestos exposure between 1999 and 2013
- 12,000 to 15,000 Americans are killed by asbestos exposure every year
The facts are clear. Asbestos takes lives every single year. If initial reports are correct, there are children out there coloring with deadly chemicals. We can’t allow this to continue. It’s important we hold the companies producing these dangerous art supplies accountable. No child should be put in danger by an innocent activity like coloring.
