According to the most recent Florida Highway Safety of Motor Vehicles Traffic Crash statistics report in 2009, 7,676 pedestrians were injured statewide as a result of motor vehicle accidents and 482 were killed. WOW, that is a lot and it is increasing by the year. After asking around, it seems that the majority of people’s biggest fears on the road is to hit a pedestrian. These accidents tend to happen especially at night time and especially if people are not wearing bright clothing or are roaming the streets intoxicated. Whatever the case may be, it is up to the driver to be aware of what is going on in the open road at any give time. We want to go against the odds and decrease the number of pedestrians injured throughout the year. This is why we strongly encourage you, if walking, to look both ways before crossing the street and be sure to use side walks and to follow pedestrian laws (no jay-walking). The Street-Crossing lights are there for a reason and they are there to help you. Even though the sun is hot and it may seem like it is taking forever for the light to say “cross” it is worth the wait. I never want to put my life in someone else’s hands because we are all fallible human beings and people make mistakes everyday and accidents happen….therefore, it is everyone’s job on the road to follow traffic and pedestrian laws and with that being said, hopefully the amount of pedestrian injuries and fatalities will decrease by next year. If you or someone you know is involved in a pedestrian accident, we want you to know that we are here for you.
